I’ve chosen to mount this piece into a old portable cassette recorder I had bought from a carboot. This is probably the fourth one i have bought and once again despite when the seller says “it works, fully tested. ” It did not work. So i have quite a collection now. Apart from that, the idea for this is to show the mechanical attributes in creating sound as most compositions are created using digital methods and using emulators to capture the sound of what used to be the only methods of recording.
using the shell of a cassette recorder i wanted to show the mechanical functions that has now been lost in modern day recording and audio devices. keeping the shell intact I can use the 6v battery compartment to power my design, reusing what is left of something broken. I wanted to make this work with also the play, record, rewind etc buttons but due to damages in the shell this wouldn’t work. Still I kept the original graphic on the front while mounting my own buttons in place.

Tape machines are fascinating in how you can mostly see the inner workings of the machine. I wanted to also incorporate this into my design by using the door where the cassette itself would sit as a place to house the motors for more visual appeal.
