For this piece I had two songs in mind by Aphex Twin that i wanted to mimic/reproduce. The songs are Black Box Life Recorder (Parrallax mix) and Windowlicker, specifically 3.15 – 4 part of Windowlicker. This specific part of windowlicker is what i appreciate most in the track for its stutters and glitches you are least expecting which breaks up the looped rhythm and adds some sense of randomness as each beat is switched with another, you never know where the rhythm is going next. I tried to recreate this aspect using stereo pitch delay for harmonic space, I then time stretched the drums I programmed on a alesis hr-16 drum machine. Using a sp404 I cut the drum sample into intervals which I processed through a humanize effect. This is what added the unexpected glitches to the percussion. For the melodic aspect of this composition Black Box Life Recorder is what I wanted to mimic. With the soft ambient drone carrying and filling up the space I used a kids toy keyboard for the lo-fi and dissonant sound. I used a 4 bar loop of atonal chords played on the toy keyboard which I then placed into simpler to rearrange the loop.
