Sonic Ethnography of LCC

The entrance and smoking area of LCC keeps your mind alert with the constant conversations of students milling around the surrounding area. Each voice portraying a different emotion or question, whether it’s a group caught in a heated debate or or the awkward small talk between two acquaintances . For some there is s a sense of urgency in their voice tone, like they’re here to get something done and this conversation is just chore to them waiting for it to be over, so they can move on with their day. Others want to stay and catch up on gossip.

When entering the building there’s, there’s a brief moment of silence, a sudden contrast after absorbing the chaos of people’s life stories outside. You pass through the double doors, which feel like an isolation chamber. For a brief moment all external sound cuts out, as static gets compressed into your ears. It’s as if the building is preparing you for what’s to come.

Once inside the main building every sound feels distant, yet somehow hits you all at once in waves. Voices, footsteps, and banging doors reverberate and echo throughout the building. Despite the openness of the architecture, the thick wall of sound creates a strange claustrophobia pressure that surrounds you, even in wide, airy spaces.
