For time transitions audio dramas use techniques to show transitions across time, to add depth. a example of this is.

Doctor Who: Black and White

In this audio drama two stories are told, both set in the same location but at different times (16 years apart). Having these stories in two parallel timelines allows the listener to experience the story from two different perspectives. With also the use of structure and sound in a creative way to show the listener how time shifts.

This audio drama also uses pacing and rhythm in smart ways to keep the listeners attention. For example with the two separate timeline stories, when one of the story lines has reached a cliff hanger or is building a lot of tension, this is when the scene changes to the other timeline. This keeps the flow of the structure steady and keeps the listener engaged.

With the use of sound fx and music controls and supports the pacing strongly. High tempo tense music gives the sense of urgency or something big that’s about to happen where as low tempo ambient audio gives the sense of calmness and low action scene.
